Sustainability & Stewardship

Students help install a solar oven in the Learning Garden at Marie L. Greenwood Academy in the spring of 2021.

Our Commitment to Sustainability and Stewardship

Children are innately attracted by the natural world.  When they learn components of composting and how they can reduce landfill waste, they teach sustainable practices to everyone in their family.  They love to create innovative recipes using the sun’s energy for baking, and they like to encourage everyone to bike instead of depleting the earth’s natural resources.  Children also treasure their responsibility for being stewards of historic apple trees that are nearing extinction.  We are developing Stewards of the Earth.

Solar Oven Cooking

Each One Teach One students worked beside Engineer Joe Callahan, founder of energilab, to build solar ovens to use the sun’s energy for cooking. The sun is a clean, renewable energy source that preserves the planet for future generations. We can teach you how to steam vegetables, bake cookies, pizza and healthy kale chips straight from the garden without polluting the air we breathe. It’s good for the planet, healthy for our bodies, and fun science to grow our brains and imaginations!

Biking

We love to ride bikes! Read some of our favorite bike stories by clicking on the button below.

In Each One Teach One Summer Program, Marie L. Greenwood Academy rising 5th through 7th graders were charged by the Montbello FreshLo Initiative to bike the proposed Walkable Loop to identify what they love about their neighborhood and what they would change to improve its beauty and safety.

Here’s the kids’ “data” on how to improve their Montbello community, so kids and their families can bike safely and be proud of their neighborhoods.
