Our Learning Garden

“Fun thing about gardens: they are not the only things that grow. Anyone who touches a garden grows too. The Each One Teach One Learning Garden is one I have seen soothe the restlessness of an overactive student, teach compassion to those who realize what it means to handle something with care, and heal and reassure families during a pandemic. We have celebrated in that garden. We have mourned in that garden. We have laughed, built, and created art in that garden. Pure magic comes from that garden, the kind of magic that you do not see or even feel very often.  This garden will be the legacy of all who go through the school and all who live in the community, how could it not matter?”

Latoya Erskine, Parents for Parity Board President

Our Learning Garden is dedicated to the legacy of our dear friend, farmer Austin Chitwood.

Why is a Learning Garden important?

Children’s knowledge is increased when they are involved with the learning process and can get outside of the classroom. They deepen their knowledge of botany, biology, geology, and environmental science by working in the garden. Our Learning Garden provides that opportunity.

Green spaces have been recognized for healing and peace since the beginning of time. Children thrive in our school garden, an outdoor classroom for lifelong learning. Children learn tenderness, teamwork, stewardship and all the sciences.  They adorn the space with their art.  Books come alive as they seek their own “secret garden” hideaways under fruit trees, next to berry bushes and inhaling the fragrances of herbs and flowers.
